I have watched a video on teaching moral values using animated video series. It is known as Auto B Good.

Basically, I like the fact of using animated videos to teach values to children especially. I feel that moral values cannot  be taught by  “lectures”  which is what we do in a classroom context. Instead of listening to boring lectures, I think that watching a video will be more meaningful and interesting. For example, when we want to teach our students on the value of consideration, we can show them a video of a person helping an eldery to cross the road. I believe students will understand and have a bigger picture on what is “consideration”  after watching the video. Also, I believe that students will be more motivated to learn when teachers explore many different modes and strategies to teach. Last but not least, I feel that it is a good strategy to get students to learn through watching videos because they get to see the “actual”, “real-life” situation.

My views about the video:

From the video, i could see that the pupils were stressed out by exams beacuse they were pressured by their teachers and parents. I think our society still believed that only having good grades will get their child somewhere. Thus, there exist a comparison between different children about who’s doing better and who’s not. However, I believed that this mentality is wrong. I agree with the fact that good grades will definitely get a child a secure place in future, however, this is not enough. We should also instill good values in them so that they will grow to be a morally-upright individual. Plus, to survive in this competitive world today, good grades are not enough, children also need to be a all-rounder. This is because when they step into the working world, it is not only about how much knowledge they have, but, how well they can apply this knowledge and how well they bring themselves.

In addition to that, the Ministry of Education (MOE) are also providing more choices to students these days. This is to encourage students to study the course of their interest so that they are able to excel in it. As teachers and parents, we have to realise tha, there are many options and routes to go to university today. Thus, there is no need for us to push the young generation and force them to go through the traditional route (the conventional Junior College-Uni route). Moreover, we also have to understand that different children have different needs and capabilities so it is not fair for us as teachers or parents to treat them all the same and compare them with other children.

And they are so right.

I actually cried throughout this movie (I know it’s quite dumb, but I’m actually a very emotional person). I may not be able to relate to what the kids have had gone through but I could actually understand what the teacher, Ms G, had. It’s not as if I’m as noble as what she had done with her class, but I face the same reactions from my loved ones when I go the extra mile for my students. They just couldn’t understand how I feel for the kids — they too, like in the movie, think that teaching is just another job and I shouldn’t put in too much of me. I just feel so sad watching it.

And do you know it’s actually a real story? It all just happened about two years ago.
